I spent $48,200 on this
I slept in an office closet for three years.
I never ate out. I drove a company car.
I turned the heat down whenever I left my house.
For the first 17 years of my entrepreneurial career, I lived with a mindset focused on extreme frugality.
I did the bookkeeping for every transaction of my business, despite over $10M in annual revenue.
In the past 2 years, I have added a house cleaner who comes monthly. Each week, a laundry service picks up my dirty clothes, cleans them, folds them, and then delivers them back to me. I use Instacart weekly to deliver groceries to my apartment. I often eat out with team members or with family. I have started offloading payroll and bookkeeping. I live in a one-bedroom apartment in the city. The apartment is in the apartment complex I own. I bought a tiny house. I installed it on a farmhouse property that I rent to tenants. At the tiny house, I can do strategic and creative work. I have taken my entire extended family on an annual trip out of the country. I have become a member of Freedom Boat Club and live 5 minutes away from the marina.
Below, I list the approximate extra monthly cost of all these services. I also estimated how many hours I was able to save by purchasing these services.
House Cleaner from Merry Maids = $150 (2 hours per month)
Grocery Delivery from Instacart= $50 (3 hours per month)
Laundry and Folding Service = $200 (5 hours per month)
Bookkeeping and Tax Strategy from HomeServiceCPA.com = $1200 (8 hours per month)
Maintenance for Tiny House = $150 (no time saving; increase in creative output)
Boat Club Membership = $600 (no time saving; quality time with family)
Family Vacation = $20,000 (no time saving; quality time with family)
Total Annual Cost: $48,200
Total Annual Time Savings: 216 hours (5 weeks of full-time work)
I do not regret the years I spent in a frugal lifestyle. Doing that until I was 28 years old is what gave me the means to buy back my time. Living on next to nothing allowed me to now afford experiences for my family that we never had growing up. We never had a boat. We never had our entire family together on international vacations.
I share these numbers for reference. I owned a business for 17 years before making these purchases and investments. I wish I had known that spending $50,000 would meet almost all my wants and needs. This seems much more attainable than needing a private jet.
Food prep. Grocery delivery. House cleaning. Laundry. Spending a couple of thousand dollars each month will save you WEEKS to work on your business. Once you make over $40/hr, it makes a lot of sense to outsource these tasks. This assumes you will spend the time saved on making money, not watching Netflix.
PS - A mindset shift like this one can save you thousands of dollars and years of wasted time.
